Choosing the Correct Provider is crucial!
Did you know that, as of legislation changes since 1st October 2013, the H.S.E. no longer approves first aid providers, nor do they advocate, promote or support any particular option, but they have provided the employer with a list of criteria to make their own appropriate checks to ensure they have selected a suitable first aid trainer? Its called due diligence!
But to make it easier for you, we run the OFQUAL/SQA courses, that makes you exempt from those long lists of checks. By us running these courses we are already subject to regular checks and scrutiny.
The guidance from the H.S.E. states in point 12 that “...due to awarding organisations offering ‘regulated qualifications’, you do not have to use the checklist to satisfy yourself of the competency of that organisation”, this includes OFQUAL/SQA courses. Our local, Devon County Council also advocate providers with OFQUAL regulated courses to all their schools.
If you are looking at providers that do not offer such courses then they are subject to the checks listed in the HSE Information Sheet - 'Selecting A First-Aid Provider'

Choosing the Correct First Aid Course for your Needs
The correct first aid course for you or your business will depend on your risk assessments and needs analysis. If you need help in this matter, we are happy to discuss this with you, alternatively we do run a new First Aid Risk Assessment Course that will help you and your colleagues plan your needs. The below chart will give you guidance on numbers of staff to be trained and to what level, but please remember that you will need to add to this to include any members of public ie non staff members that you deal with in your school or business. Also take into account any industry led recommendations that are relevant to you too, by regulating or governing bodies.
Of course you are welcome to chat over the phone, or we can visit and help with a site analysis before you plan or book up courses. Call 07801 491183 or email Lesley@southhamstraining.co.uk
